Italian Bubbly: Toast to Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG

Prosecco has long been synonymous with celebration, but now there’s an extra reason to break out the Italian bubbly – this year the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG region was nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Site by the Italian National Commission.

It has been a nearly 10-year process. In 2008 the campaign to have the region nominated was launched, and it was added to the tentative list for Italy in 2010. If approved, Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG would join the Italian wine regions of Barolo and Pantelleria, which currently have UNESCO World Heritage status.

This hilly region is located between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene in the Treviso province in northeast Italy, and encompasses 15 municipalities where grapes are grown. In 1969 it was named a DOC, and elevated to DOCG in 2009. Prosecco sparkling wines are made from the Glera grape, and get their bubbles via the Charmat method. This differs from the traditional method used with champagne, as instead of secondary fermentation taking place in the bottle it happens in a large closed tank.

Sparkling wines from Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG range from dry to sweet, and can be enjoyed on all sorts of occasions. Open a bottle to brighten up a weeknight, or toast with Prosecco for a birthday, anniversary or promotion.

If your Italian is a bit rusty (or nonexistent, that’s ok too), these names may seem like a mouthful. Fortunately with these and all Prosecco, the wines are approachable and easy to drink. And even if you can’t pronounce the name of the producer, you can’t help but feel happy when you hear the pop of the cork.
