Biltmore Winery Celebrates 30th Anniversary

2015 marks a milestone year for the Biltmore Winery. The iconic estate in Asheville, North Carolina is celebrating the winery’s 30th anniversary.

George Vanderbilt, who founded the Biltmore Estate in the late 19th century, was an avid wine fan. He brought back wine from his travels and would incorporate it into dinners and celebrations. In the early 1970s his grandson William A.V. Cecil had the vision to transform part of the grounds into a vineyard and winery. Cecil sought out experts in California and France to transform an unlikely location for a vineyard — North Carolina — into a place where vitis vinifera would thrive. It took more than a decade of testing and experimentation, and in 1984 its first wines were bottled: the 1983 Chateau Biltmore Merlot and Chateau Biltmore Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Biltmore Winery first opened its doors on May 11, 1985. Since then it has become America’s most visited winery, welcoming more than 1 million visitors each year. The winery produces approximately 150,000 cases annually of wines that range from still to sparkling, dry to sweet. In addition to its own vineyard, Biltmore sources grapes from partners in North Carolina, California and Washington.
